Once the clocks change, many of us end up walking our dogs before sunrise or after sunset. Evening walks can be some of the most peaceful of the day, but they need a little more planning.

Be easy to see

A reflective or light-up collar, harness or leash makes your dog far easier for drivers and cyclists to spot. A reflective jacket or a small clip-on light for yourself helps too.

Bring your own light

A small flashlight or headlamp lets you see uneven ground, and it makes picking up after your dog much easier. Keep your phone charged as a backup.

Keep the leash a little shorter

In the dark, it is harder to spot other dogs, wildlife or things on the ground your dog might want to eat. A slightly shorter leash gives you more control without making the walk less enjoyable.

Stick to familiar routes

Well-lit streets and routes you know well are the best choice at night. Save new trails and off-leash areas for daylight.

Check ID before you head out

Make sure your dog's tag has your current phone number and that the microchip details registered to your dog are up to date. If your dog ever gets loose, those details are what reunite you.

Quick checklist: reflective gear, a light, a charged phone, a secure collar or harness, and current ID details.
